Spring, sunshine, & explosion

Spring, sunshine, & explosion

Yesterday was a beautiful spring day but when I tried to take photographs of the brightly coloured flowers, the sun and my camera had a fight. I think the result is kind of nice but I should really pay attention to ISO settings.

Glowing flower.

The bright sunshine.

Recipe: crab cakes & cocktail sauce

Recipe: crab cakes & cocktail sauce

I’ve been in a cooking mood this past week and it seems to be continuing on into this week. Today, I made crab cakes. Crab cakes with cocktail sauce is one of my favourite seafood-type dishes from the United States and since the lighting was just right today, I took photographs of our dinner and I include recipes for both sauce and meal below.

Crab cakes & cocktail sauce

Cocktail sauce:

• Ketchup, 1 cup
• Horseradish, 2 tablespoons
• 1/2 lemon squeezed

This is a very simple sauce. Take all three ingredients in a small bowl and mix them together thoroughly. Voilà!

Crab cakes:

• 250 grams (half pound) crab meat
• 1 egg
• 3/4 cup bread crumbs
• 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
• 1 red pepper (paprika in Swedish), finely chopped
• 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
• 1/4 cup mayonnaise
• 1 tablespoon garlic powder
• 1 tablespoon dill
• 1 tablespoon salt
• 1/2 tablespoon cayenne pepper
• 1/2 lemon, juiced
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• flour, for dusting

In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients, except for the flour and olive oil. Shape into small cakes and dust outside gently with flour.

Heat oil in skillet over medium heat. When oil is hot, carefully place crab cakes in pan and fry until browned, about 4 to 5 minutes. Carefully flip crab cakes and fry on other side until golden brown, about 4 minutes.

Serve with sauce, have a party.

I'm an old cat lady that lives in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés

I'm an old cat lady that lives in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés

Sometimes I feel as if I’m a very old French lady - hence the hair style - who has several cats including one named Fonteque and who goes to the market each day in her funny dresses to buy oranges and lemons. Title explained.

But more importantly, there are a pair of shoes in this world that, if in my possession, I would never want to buy another pair of shoes again because they are so lovely.

Okay. So that is almost certainly a lie - I apologise - and I would want to buy more shoes later on but the fact remains that for months I’ve been secretly fawning over the Miu Miu cat patterns. Struggling to hide the urge of displaying my affection aloud, I have finally succumbed.

Easter in Sweden: glad påsk!

Easter in Sweden: glad påsk!

Like many other traditions and holidays, Easter in Sweden is quite unusual. As I am told by my friends, it really has nothing to do with Christianity, spring flowers or animals, or even chocolate eggs in the morning. In fact, it’s sort of a Swedish Halloween if you think about it.

On Maundy Thursday, Swedish children dress up as witches (mostly with headscarves and rosy cheeks) in honour of the idea that witches, according to Swedish folklore, will fly to Blåkulla, the blue mountain or hill, to meet the devil and then return on Saturday. And when it comes to holidays that involve witches, there’s usually candy, right? Absolutely! Average Swedes eat more candy within these four days than in the entire rest of the year, or so it seems.

On Friday, after witches fly away, Stockholm is barren except for confused German tourists and the random resident eating ice cream because the sun is shining - including me. I really do love pistachio-flavoured ice cream.

Saturday and Sunday are the days of family gathering although in the small Crafoord flat with Cal’s family away - a mum in Halmstad, a father in Argentina living the tropical life, and siblings in their respective countries/cities - we haven’t done much. But, as I know other Swedes, they had family lunches and dinners and it was swell.

And, of course, Monday, too, is a red day which means no work and no school.

If you are in Sweden during the months of March and early April, you will see large amounts of colourful feathers tied to birch sticks (shown above) which are put in vases or tied to trees and bushes and you will see them everywhere.

Also some other traditions involve setting bonfires of which I have only heard of because I haven’t spotted a fire anywhere. Perhaps that’s because I live in the city and we don’t light fires. It’s dangerous.

I've been quite busy!

I've been quite busy!

On Sunday, Carl Johan and I had lunch with his grand uncle John who has written several Crafoord family history books and is now working on an English edition with Cal as his “book-layout-helper.”

On Monday, I received an e-mail telling me that my classes at Folkuniversitetet will start on the sixth of April, which happens to be next week.

Then on Tuesday, I had an appointment again at Hårgänget with Andy who makes my hair look really neat and straight. Afterwards, Fredrik met me and he spent the night with us, cooked pasta, ate ice cream, played billiards with us, and went to see Fantastic Mr. Fox which only released to Sweden’s cinemas yesterday.

The crowded window.

Trastfåglar!

Which brings us today: Glorious nothing!

The 90s dress by Jenny Widing Carefully Selected

The 90s dress by Jenny Widing Carefully Selected

Yesterday, Carl Johan and I hopped over to Tjallamalla in the last ten minutes of their being opened for the day and bought this great dress by Jenny Widing, Carefully Selected.

(It’s dress week, obviously.)

I made this silly collage-Ollie to represent how brilliantly cool and awesome I think it would look with this hat from Michael Kors fall 2009. Add some different shoes, a pair of funny spectacles perhaps, and keep the orange fingernails. You don’t see it? I do and I will wear it and be awesome all by myself.

One Red Dress

Today I am wearing a size jätte-large dress that I bought yesterday from Stockholms Stadsmission. It’s the comfiest thing ever. Woohoo.

Best game ending for a flash game?

Best game ending for a flash game?

Most of you know that I’m a Kongregate addict. I’d completed a game the other day and decided this is the best ending screen ever and I needed to let my blog know, because, well, this is you, and you rock! Congratulations forever!

Hibernation complete in 10... 9...

Hibernation complete in 10... 9...

I really should invest in a bear suit, don’t you think?

(I have been doing an admirable job at hibernating what with the darkness, cold weather, and a large store of fruits and nuts. So.)
